I love this time of the year in Phuket. The weather can still be great, the beaches uncrowded, Soi Bangla uncluttered. A host of new bars opens their doors for the first time ahead of the impending high season. As a member of the entertainment press, I think there is nothing better than being invited to all the new opening parties and enjoying some warm hospitality.I was recently asked to join the grand opening of the Solution Lounge Bar in Kata. Owner Jon Partington is a longtime friend and a thoroughly great guy, so I was pleased to check out what he was up to with his new project. As the shift in Phuket’s clientele moves from single guys to a more wholesome family crowd, it is very important that a bar recognizes these changes and acts appropriately. Partington is definitely seizing the opportunity with both hands. The Solution Bar offers a contemporary and trendy interior. Although the bar is not too large inside, it offers a cozy and welcoming environment to enjoy an hour or two with friends — without fear of being press-ganged too much into partaking in the world’s oldest trade.On viewing the fixtures and fittings, it is easy to ascertain that Partington has a great eye and an excellent attention to detail. If it weren’t for the three-legged dogs on the soi and the constant stream of vendors and tuk-tuks streaming by, you wouldn’t know if you were in a trendy bar in London, Liverpool or Lithuania! The two large flat-screen TVs inside showcase all major sporting events, and the sound system is loud enough to wake up Egyptian pharaohs who have been resting for 5,000 years.There are hostesses available to cater for your every whim, but the bar is definitely geared towards couples and other tourists looking for a great night out on the tiles. The Solution Bar can be located in Kata on the new Soi that runs directly to the side of the old market, across Patak Road from the new market.
