Officials expect to announce unofficial results late on Sunday night. The Bangkok winner was already known – prominent human rights activist Rosana Tositrakul. (For separate story click here.) Turnout was expected to fall well short of the 70 per cent targetted by the Election Commission. Throughout the country on Sunday, active-duty military personnel were ordered to vote and taken to the local polls in an attempt to bring up the overall participation. The EC predicted that final figures would show overall turnout of around 60 per cent, and said it was satisfied. The election “went smoothly nationwide. There were no violent incidents,” EC member Praphan Naiyakovit said at a press conference called after the polls closed at 3 pm. “We are satisfied with voter turnout although the number was lower than our target” of 70 per cent, he said. Nationwide, turnout was estimated at 57 per cent of eligible voters, about the same as for the Constitution referendum last August. Some 50 per cent of eligible voters in Bangkok turned up at polling booths, while 60 per cent in the North showed up to vote. Final reports of voter turnout in the South and central region were yet to be tabulated. Sale and consumption of alcohol were the most common violations of election law, with 141 arrests in 131 separate cases. “I personally think it’s high time to revise the alcoholic drink purchase ban on the eve of and on an election day, because a large number of offenders are arrested during every election,” said Mr Praphan. He said he would personally propose an amendment on the issue. In the South, a bomb exploded near a polling station in Yala province, injuring three soldiers. Election Commissioner Prapan Naikowit said while inspecting the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) election coordination center that the poll agency had received 34 complaints, most of them relating to giving money to eligible voters.
